About the Artist and His Work

Like a noir novel or a metaphysical western, fiction seeps into the settings and characters that construct the narratives—linear or not—of Ivan Melnick's paintings and prints. The anomalous, fantastical figures and situations that occupy his vast planes of darkness are illuminated by small flashes of light, as if he wanted to force us to discover what is unseen (but intuited). These are images that leap from the realm of the cinematic or the literary (detective novels, cosmic horror?), emerging from a spontaneous process of drawing lines, playing with planes and perspectives. The narrative, Melnick says, comes out like automatic writing, like "something not very digested."

Brief Overview

Iván Melnick, born in 1985 in Santiago, Chile, is a multidisciplinary artist who graduated from Finis Terrae University (Santiago, Chile). His artistic practice is based on an internal exploration revealed through his use of materials. He employs corrosive materials, feeling a connection to the elements that burn, dissolve, and age, and harbors a fascination with the occult. He has exhibited in major museums in Chile and Germany, winning numerous awards and competitions.
